Overview
About This Place
Lusail City is Qatar's most ambitious and far-reaching urban development project, an entirely new city built from scratch on reclaimed and undeveloped land north of Doha. Designed to eventually house over 450,000 residents across 19 distinct districts, Lusail is not just a real estate development but a complete city: it includes residential towers and private villas, commercial districts, luxury marinas, entertainment zones, parks, mosques, schools, and a light rail transit network connecting it all. At its heart is the iconic Lusail Stadium, which hosted the final match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The waterfront boulevard along Lusail's marina is one of the most impressive public spaces in Qatar, with promenades, restaurants, and views that rival the finest waterfronts in the world.
History
Historical Significance
The Lusail masterplan was announced in 2005 and construction began in 2006, led by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company through its subsidiary Lusail Real Estate Development Company, with contributions from international architects and contractors from across the world. The project accelerated significantly in the lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, transforming what had been largely empty desert and coastline into a functioning, inhabited urban center in under two decades. Lusail gained global recognition when it hosted the World Cup Final, a match watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide, placing a brand-new city on the world's map almost overnight.
